Portrait Workshop

Oil Portrait Workshop from Life using the sight-size method

Among visual representations, the portrait carries an expressive power that has fascinated artists for countless centuries. We are not merely talking about reproducing a face on a flat surface, but about a psychological and existential exploration that transcends simple imitation. The technical tools offered during the course are intended to provide each student with the means to express and give form to this spirit.

This intensive five-day course is dedicated to portrait painting from life in natural light, and it is designed to explore the entire painting process step by step: from composition and drawing, to the construction of tonal values, all the way to the final touches. During the course I will illustrate strategies for simplifying the large amount of information we observe when tackling a portrait, breaking the challenges down into clear and manageable steps.

Through the sight-size method, you will learn to observe with precision and to effectively translate proportions and tonal values—a method that can be applied not only to portraiture but to any type of subject.

A live demonstration will be carried out during the workshop to illustrate each phase of the work, including palette organization and the handling of painterly stages.

The course is open to all levels—from beginners seeking a solid foundation to more experienced painters who wish to refine their technique.
